Wednesday's Words on a Friday

On Wednesday’s, Delores, from Under The Porch Light, has a meme which she calls
“Words for Wednesday”.

She puts up a selection of six words which we then use in a short story, or a poem.
I’m hopeless at poetry so I always do a story.

It’s a fun challenge…why not join in?

This week's words are:
1. vociferous
2. ambivalent
3. grunge
4. ink
5. flipped
6. dread

Kim busied herself turning the bacon and sausages, then flipped the pancakes and checked the coffee machine was working. Stuart had promised it would be fixed over the weekend, but he was often ambivalent about such things, so Kim was pleased to find it was actually producing coffee instead of just burbling away uselessly.

She glanced at the clock, realised it was almost time to open the diner and quickly ate her pancakes while putting the bacon and sausages in the warmer for Stuart's breakfast.

Kim enjoyed working at the diner, the fast-paced hot-food shuffle seemed almost like dancing as she and Stuart expertly avoided colliding with each other when manouvering from hotplates to counter and tables.

The regular customers knew her well now and all had known each other for years, so conversations flowed as easily and naturally as a river finds its way through a gorge.
Yesterday's topic had been the new ink on Stuart's upper arm, a red dragon with golden flames shooting from its mouth.

An hour later, the morning rush had slowed when Kim heard the unmistakable sound of Detective Riley. She glanced up with dread to see him seating himself in his favoured corner booth. He'd been coming for mid-morning coffee and pie for a month now, each time quite vociferous in denouncing the grunge he supposedly found every time. Stuart said he was just trying to break her down and not to worry, the diner was spotless as always.

However, Kim did worry, as once he'd been served his coffee and pie, (apple today, with a dollop of whipped cream), Detective Riley always spent the good part of an hour questioning her, trying to find out who she was, where she had come from, was she planning on staying in this tiny "nothing" town that wasn't even a dot on the map?

  1. Oooh - dragons. If ever I was to get a tattoo I would find it hard to go past a dragon.
This is an intriguing story - I am sure that Kim has a hidden story, and would love to know more.

  5. Elephant's Child; I've thought about tattoos, but don't really want one. I've thought about my name, birth date and blood group tattooed on my ankle though, in case of an accident now that I'm older.
Kim does have a hidden story, but I'm not sure how to continue without copying every other book out there.

Delores; thank you. About Kim, read above comment to EC.

    fishducky; thank you too.

Pearl; vociferous commendations from Pearl-that's almost like a gold star.
