Thursday Thoughts --  The Late Edition

Waiter: we've just had some lobsters flown in from Maine
Customer: oh the poor things, their first night in the big city and they have to end up on my plate.

Thoughts:
I went to bed last night knowing I hadn't scheduled a post for today, thinking that I'd get a couple of hours sleep then be wide awake, or at least awake enough, to put something here by 2-3am. 
Well, that didn't work out, as you can see.
It's almost 8am already.

Tuesday night's wide awakeness didn't repeat itself, instead my brain is a heat-melted mush puddle and all I want to do is lie around doing nothing until April. Or May.
Probably I should have stayed home yesterday, but things had to be done, so out I went, to hang around at bus stops, waiting for buses that are (lately) never on time or simply don't turn up.

I was told by a fellow traveller who also lives in these flats (another P-that makes three) that there are less buses during this holiday period because people don't use them. 
What? 
Oh, "they" are thinking of all those who commute to work and home again, they're on holiday, so the buses aren't needed. 
No thought at all for the rest of us who use public transport all the time, or those who are still working over the holidays.

On my way home yesterday I shopped in the city Coles supermarket, because they have things I want that aren't available in my local Woolworths, and I saw some things new to me. Maybe they've been available for a while, but I don't shop in the city often.

In the salads section, I saw and bought, a 400g packet of **Kale Coleslaw mix.  It comes with an enclosed pack of yoghurt/chia dressing and also a small pack of three seed mix, pepitas, sunflower seeds and sesame seeds.
The label says it contains 5 superfoods, kale, red cabbage, carrot, beetroot and broccoli, all nicely shredded and ready to eat. 

I mixed a small portion last night with my coleslaw dressing and set it in the fridge to let the flavours meld while I sliced some chicken, (I'll keep the yoghurt/chia dressing for some other time).
It was nice! and I'll definitely be buying it again.

Also saw, and bought, a 120g packet of Superfood Leaf Blend, which has similar ingredients, but with leaves as well as shredded stuff. Kale, baby chard leaves, red cabbage, baby red beet leaves, carrot.
I haven't tried that mix yet, but will tonight.

As I write this, I'm thinking that today is the last day of 2015 and I should be cleaning my home as I always do at this time. 
I like to wake up to a freshly cleaned home on a fresh New Year's Day.  
But it seems I just can't be bothered with all that fuss. 

My floors in particular are in need of vacuuming, the dust and cat fluff is building up and I'm sitting here thinking, what does it matter? who cares if I vacuum today or on the weekend when it might be a bit cooler? Or next month? It will be hotter then, but I will have acclimatised a bit. 
Maybe.
I hate summer.
So I'll run a broom around instead and change the bedsheets and call it done. I'm tired and achy anyway, so that will have to do. It isn't too bad here, certainly doesn't look like a rubbish tip.
If anyone knocks on my door, they've come to see me, not my home.

wow!

I'm watching Gordon Ramsay rip into a restaurant owner who hasn't a clue. His parents left him the restaurant/pizza place, but I don't think they taught him anything about running the establishment.

A customer has just become ill from the seafood from his kitchen and Gordon has ordered the kitchen shut down with everything in it thrown out. An ambulance was called for the customer.
A vegetarian customer finds a bone in her tomato sauce.
Owner: but that's the way we've always made it, with pork bones and (whatever that was) for flavour. 
Gordon: you cannot serve this to a vegetarian customer!!
Gordon has asked all current customers to leave.

The owner typically stays out of the kitchen entirely and spends all his time in the front making pizzas, the place is also a pizza takeaway place. 

The owner is still running the place exactly as it was since the 1960s. 
Nothing has changed, not even the menu. 
Fresh ingredients are bought, processed then frozen to be served later. 
The food is bland and/or bad. 

Finally, the owner is asking Gordon to help him, but still having to think about changes that are so necessary. 
All the kitchen staff have confessed to being embarrassed to work there. 
(the show is from 2013, so I'm not saying anything not already known).

Okay, right now, Gordon is emptying the upstairs freezers, so much food, SO MUCH frozen food unlabelled, undated, freezer burned, frozen mouldy meatballs, even frozen pasta and all so old. 
There are more freezers down in the cellar....
Frankly, I'm horrified.

This is very sad to watch, the owner looking at many, many tables filled with many dozens of large containers of frozen goods removed from the freezers, not even knowing how old it all is. He doesn't want to change the menus because everything is as it was when his parents died. Some time in the 80s, I think.
Gordon is pleading with him to let go of the past. 

The owner is talking about giving up the restaurant, change is so hard for him, but after wiping away tears, he is going to let Gordon help him try to change and start over.

Aha! we're in Brooklyn! I had no idea.

(I KNOW this is (hopefully) rare and doesn't happen everywhere, but it is one reason why I almost never eat at restaurants. Apart from the cost, which I simply can't afford too often.)

Right, day one of the freshly decorated restaurant, new menus, new foods, everyone is excited, but will the owner be able to lead his team? Or will he collapse under the pressure? Remember, this man has avoided his own kitchen for many years. Does not know what, how, why things go on in there.

Day three, first customers arrive......and the owner is making a mistake or three, food is not leaving the kitchen fast enough, it is plated ready to go, but no-one is picking it up, because owner J is busy chatting to customers. 
Gordon is pushing him, as is needed, to keep on top of things, the restaurant looks like it might be turned around, people are enjoying the food, making favourable comments.

Weeks later, things are still going well at Mama Maria's.

well, it's done,

the twice yearly fridge clean out. 

Shelves emptied and washed, crispers emptied and washed, bags of assorted lettuce leaves tossed out, only a wee bit past the use-by dates, but smelling sour.
Out went the mouldy onion, a mushy apple, old garlic that had gone soft. 

Other stuff taking up space but not being used after the first tasting also got tossed out. 
Bye-bye garlic aioli. 
Doesn't that sound like something that would be deliciously yummy? Well, it wasn't. 
More like oily, runny mayonnaise, and if there was any garlic in there, I'm Queen Elizabeth's twin sister, because I couldn't taste it. Besides, the use by date was last September.

Even the freezer got an overhaul. Freezer-burnt bread, meant for toast, but who eats hot toast when the temps are over 40C?

Frozen peas and corn, untouched since mid autumn, served with today's dinner, but didn't taste quite right, so I scraped them off my plate into the bin and followed that with both packets along with several packets of wrapped leftovers that I'd forgotten to label. 
I have no idea what they were or when I put them in there, so out they went. 

It's quite possible they were uneaten cat food that Angel rejected. I don't like to just put those in the bin because they get stinky and I'd rather not have my rubbish bin attracting ants, flies, cockroaches, stray dogs and cats. It's bad enough walking past other people's bins with the stench coming out of them and the trails of ants going into them.

Now it's all clean and tidy again, ready for the New Year. More ready than I am.

Sunday Selections # 256

I usually go with a theme for my Sunday Selections and this week I will show you some of the things I grew in my previous home, where I had a garden to properly call my own.

If the computer will just behave itself and show me the photos I'm looking for.....!

gollum. I'm trying to grow one here and after all these months it is beginning to grow extra shoots, but I'm going to buy more, since I want that area greened up sooner.

Wednesday's Words on a Friday, appearing on a Saturday because of Christmas Day

Here is my story:

Lizzie, Fee and me had been together since day one of first grade.
Beautiful Lizzie Townsend, brilliant Fiona Orlando and me, plain Mary Brown.

We had bonded immediately and stood as one throughout infant school, primary school and high school. There'd been a few challenges along the way, but the bond held firm. 
Now we were facing University, determining which paths our eventual careers would take. 

We weren't worried about Fee at all, she'd be an expert at whatever she chose to do. An ace mathematician, Fee was going to study business accounting, business management and wanted to become an auditor and/or accountant. Knowing her, she'd do both and do them well. 

Lizzie was going to study ecological sciences and make the world a healthier place for future generations. She had enrolled already in several classes and was buying notebooks and pencils by the dozen.

Me? I was concerned about a different group of people. 

Those who had fallen beyond the radar of modern social services, who seemed to be focused mainly on the working classes, those able to be taxed. I planned to sneak through their ranks as an unnoticed junior social worker and develop a portfolio of the elderly. 
The ones who had survived wars and depressions and now barely survived, living alone and lonely in damp little cottages, often ill and /or disabled, without many of the resources available to the rest of the population.
They deserved our respect and help, after all, without them, we wouldn't be here now.

Someone had to fight for them, someone had to speak up and that someone would be me. Mary Brown.
